Telegram banned by Brazil for being unresponsive on emails

Telegram banned

The Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes of Brazil has banned Telegram on Friday and asked the National Telecommunications Agency to intimate internet providers to block the messaging service in next five days.

The decision came after the Brazilian Federal Police claimed that Telegram is “notoriously known for its stance of not cooperating with judicial and police authorities in several countries.” as per the local media reports.

Why was Telegram Banned in Brazil?

Since Telegram doesn’t disclose the communication details of the entities involved in a communication, this went against the court’s order to hand over details of mentioned accounts. However, the messaging service did block those mentioned accounts from their platform.

The Brazilian Federal Police has forwarded court orders and requested Telegram for registrants and account details of those suspended users, but had received no response from the messaging firm. And this why Telegram was banned yesterday and quoted as contempt of court.

“The disregard for Brazilian legislation and the repeated failure to comply with numerous judicial decisions by Telegram including those emanating from the Federal Supreme Court – is a circumstance completely incompatible with the current constitutional order, in addition to contradicting expressly legal provision,” said the Brazilian Federal Court Justice.

Company’s response on Telegram ban by Brazil

The Founder and CEO Pavel Durov said that Telegram had some email miscommunications between Telegram.org and the Brazilian Supreme Court which made us miss our emails, and that’s definitely a mistake at Telegram’s end. In February the company compiled and responded with a suggestion to send future requests to a dedicated email id, however, it seems the Brazilian Court has used an old-general purpose email id to reach us, which led to unresponsiveness from the company.

The company later mentioned that they have processed the recent request from the Court and will submitting a report shortly regarding the same.

The CEO also stated that the messaging service is receiving multiple requests from several entities due to the current state of the world. The last 3 weeks have been challenging times for our content team because of this reason. The Court should give us a few days to appoint a dedicated representative for Brazil who will handle future requests and this will be a reliable communication channel.
