Russia blocks Twitter, Facebook and other foreign publications

Russia blocks Facebook, Twitter and other foreign media houses after these platforms restricted and deactivated pr-Kremlin media houses including RIA Novosti, Sputnik and Russia Today.

Along with Facebook and Meta, Twitter is also now blocked by Russia as per Prosecutor General’s Office request. Twitter mentioned that they are aware of the restrictions in Russia, and are working to keep the service safe and accessible for Russian users.

Why Russia blocks social media platforms?

Two days back, Roskmnadazor requested Meta (parent company of Facebook), to lift the restriction laid upon the Russian media outlets. Considering the actions of Meta, the decision to block Facebook in Russia was made on March 04,2022.

Meta has blocked multiple new channels including Zveda TV, RIA Novosti, Sputnik, the Lenta.ru, Russia Today and Gazeta.ru which has led to Russia’s action on Facebook and Meta. Since these social media giants blocked Russian users from accessing Russian-owned news outlets, the country needs to act on it, and now has blocked the social media platforms in Russia.

“Soon millions of ordinary Russians will find themselves cut off from reliable information, deprived of their everyday ways of connecting with family and friends and silenced from speaking out. We will continue to do everything we can to restore our services so they remain available to people to express themselves safely and securely and organize for action.” said Meta’s President for Global Affairs.

Russia blocks BBC, DW, Voice of America and more

Roskomnadzor has blocked multiple foreign news outlets in Russia, including BBC, DW, Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. The eastern superpower also claimed that these outlets are spreading false information about Russia’s operation on Ukraine, methods employed by Russian military and the casualties count on Russia’s army.

“On the orders from the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office, Roskomnadzor has restricted access to many information resources operated by foreign media outlets, including those designated as foreign agents in Russia,” said the Roskomnadzor.

Along with Facebook, Meta, Twitter and other news outlets, Russia asked Google yesterday to stop advertising false campaigns on Russia and Ukraine conflict.
