New US Cybersecurity Bill is passed to fortify the nation’s security posture

The US Senate has passed the bill ‘Strengthening American Cybersecurity Act’ this week to enhance the cybersecurity infrastructure in the country. This new bill comes at the right time when there are strong tensions among the world due to Ukraine and Russian conflict.

The US has been targeted by multiple Russian-based ransomware organizations including the recent arrest of REvil ransomware operators, which is why the need for robust cybersecurity across the country is a mandate now.

What is the New US Cybersecurity Bill?

The new bipartisan legislation,  mandates entities that are hit by a cyber attack to report the incident within 72 hours to the U.S.Cybersecurity and CISA, along with the alerts to the agency about ransomware payments within 24 hours.

The organizations affected by a cyberattack need to ensure their data is preserved properly and share the updates “to a previously submitted covered cyber incident report if substantial new or different information becomes available or if the covered entity makes a ransom payment after submitting a covered cyber incident report.”

This new Strengthening American Cybersecurity Act of 2022 is a combination of three different bills – the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA), the Cyber Incident Reporting Act (CIRA), and the Federal Secure Cloud Improvement and Jobs Act (FSCIJA).

The FISMA side of the act will bring in better cybersecurity practices, while the FSCIJA will aim to speed up the deployment of cloud computing products and services, and bring faster and secure cloud capabilities, create jobs and reduce legal dependency. The bill is now approved by the Senate and has to pass through the House for it to become a law.

“As cyber and ransomware attacks continue to increase, the federal government must be able to coordinate a response quickly and hold these bad actors accountable,” said Rob Portman, U.S. Senator.

This new US cybersecurity bill will increase the visibility into cyberattacks that is happening across the nation on a day-to-day basis and make things easy for response, mitigation and alerts to similar infrastructures so they can act upon it before it is too late.
