MSI ransomware attack forces company wide enhanced security

MSI Ransomware Attack

Taiwanese PC manufacturer, MSI (Micro-Star International) has officially confirmed that it has fallen victim to a cyber attack, putting its users’ data at risk.

The company detected network anomalies and promptly initiated incident response and recovery measures, as well as alerting law enforcement agencies. However, MSI did not disclose the specific details of the attack, including when it took place and if it involved any proprietary information or source code.

The affected systems have gradually resumed normal operations with no significant impact on financial business, according to the company’s brief notice shared on Friday.

Nevertheless, MSI is taking steps to enhance the security of data on its network and infrastructure. In a regulatory filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange, the company announced that it is setting up enhanced controls to ensure the security of data.

To prevent users from downloading malicious files from other sources, MSI is urging them to obtain firmware/BIOS updates only from its official website. This is essential in light of the recent ransomware attack that targeted the company.

Money Message Ransomware Gang Identified

The ransomware attack was carried out by a new ransomware gang known as Money Message, which added MSI to its list of victims. The group utilizes a double extortion technique that involves exfiltrating the victim’s data before encrypting it.

If the ransom is not paid, the group uploads the data on their leak site, as noted by Cyble in an analysis published this week.

The development comes a month after Acer confirmed its own data breach that resulted in the theft of 160 GB of confidential data. It was advertised for sale on March 6, 2023, on the now-defunct BreachForums.

The recent MSI ransomware attack highlights the need for companies to take proactive steps to enhance their network security and protect their users’ data.

Impact of MSI Ransomware Attack on Users

The MSI ransomware attack has left users vulnerable to data breaches, as the ransomware group Money Message exfiltrated the data before encrypting it. This means that the group has access to sensitive information about MSI’s users, including personal and financial data.

If the ransom is not paid, the group will upload the data on their leak site, leaving the users exposed to further threats such as identity theft and financial fraud.

MSI’s Response to the Ransomware Attack

MSI has responded to the ransomware attack by enhancing its network security to prevent future attacks. The company is setting up enhanced controls to ensure the security of data on its network and infrastructure. MSI is also urging its users to obtain firmware/BIOS updates only from its official website to prevent them from downloading malicious files from other sources.

The recent MSI ransomware attack highlights the need for companies to take proactive steps to enhance their network security and protect their users’ data. It is essential to have effective incident response and recovery measures in place to minimize the impact of a cyber attack.

Companies must also be transparent in their communication about cyber attacks to avoid damaging their reputation and losing the trust of their users.

The MSI ransomware attack is a reminder of the growing threat of cyber attacks and the need for companies to take cybersecurity seriously. Companies must invest in robust network security measures and be proactive in identifying and addressing vulnerabilities. They must also ensure that their users are aware of the risks and take steps to protect themselves from cyber threats.
