Microsoft releases Windows Server update to fix Remote Desktop Issues

Microsoft released a crucial emergency update for Windows Server addressing the Remote Desktop Issue. Microsoft mentioned that this Out-of-band  (OOB) update on Jan 04. 2022 to resolve the Windows Server RDP performance issue, black screen, and sign-in delay.

As per Microsoft’s statement users may also be unable to use the remote desktop to access the server and in some cases the server might go unresponsive.

Windows Server Update affected platforms

The affected platforms include Windows Server 2021 R2, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2022. Since this update doesn’t come under Windows Update, it won’t be installed automatically on those affected systems. Users can get the standalone KB5010196 update package for Windows Server 2019 from this knowledge base.

This update can also be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog, while IT admins can get this update from WSUS using the Microsoft Update Catalog.

This cumulative update KB5010196 will not require the previous Windows Server updates to be installed.

Microsoft has yet to resolve this Windows Server Update issue for all affected versions

The versions that needs to be fixed still includes Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2012 R2, and Windows Server 2016. However, no need to be worried as Microsoft is already working on the fix and this should be available in the next few days.

It has to be noted that only a week earlier, Microsoft did issue emergency updates to fix the Windows 11 issues that was triggered by the expired Microsoft digital certificate.

And last year, Microsoft published a number of OOB updates to resolve the PDF opening bug, PrintNightmare vulnerability, WiFi crashing and printing issues.

Admins and IT departments need to deploy this Windows Server Update to ensure their Remote Desktop communications will be issue free. Windows Servers are a crucial part of an organization’s cybersecurity, so please install the updates to the earliest.
