AvosLocker Ransomware Group gives decryptor after breaching US Police

AvosLocker Ransomware group has given a free decryptor after accidentally encrypting a US government agency. AvosLocker ransomware group attacked a US police department and encrypted devices.

The group also stole the data from those encrypted devices.

AvosLocker Ransomware Group and its intentions

According to a security researcher pancak3, the AvosLocker ransomware group handed over the decryptor after realizing that the victim was a government agency.

It is to be noted that the actors have only provided the decryptor and not the list of files that were stolen and the process in which they breached the agency network. As per AvosLocker actors, they usually do not target government bodies and healthcare institutions.

AvosLocker also mentioned they purposely avoid government bodies because tax payer money is generally hard to get. However, law enforcement has arrested multiple ransomware members in recent times, which includes Netwalker, REvil, Egregor and Clop ransomware groups.

Law enforcement’s action on ransomware actors

These actions have made certain ransomware groups to shutdown their operation including Avaddon, REvil, BlackMatter and DarkSide groups. While we know that most of these groups rebrand themselves to jump again for another operation, the pressure from law enforcement should be appreciated.
